movie review: i am not an easy man
Hi everybody! This is Eli. Today I’m going to talk about a movie I watched last month.
みなさんこんにちは！ エリーです。今日は一か月前ぐらいに見た映画についてお話します。
One of my best friends in the dorm strongly recommended to me the French movie “I Am Not an Easy Man”, which just came out two months ago on Netflix.
今住んでいる寮で一番仲のいい人が最近、『軽い男じゃないのよ』という映画をお勧めしてくれた。2か月前にネットフリックスで配信されたフランス映画です。（下のトレーラーは英語字幕だけど、字幕は日本語にも訳されてると思う。）
The plot of the film is a second-wave feminist fantasy: the protagonist Damien is a chauvinist young man that sees his world turning upside down after he hits his head. Suddenly, he finds himself in which gender relations are reversed – women are the dominant sex.
映画の台本はフェミニスト・ファンタジーのようなものだ。主人公のダミエンは、女性差別主義者の若い男性だ。ある日歩きながら頭を打って気絶するが、目が覚めたら周りの世界が一変したことに気づく。この新しい世界では、男女関係はさかさまなのだ。
What was before a ruthless womanizer slowly begins to understand the weight of gender inequality. He finds himself objectified, loses his job for refusing to perform sexual acts on his boss, joins a “maschilist” activist group to defend his rights. He meets the successful woman writer Alexandra, whose attitude is very discriminating towards men, and is torn by the feelings of love he feels for her on the one side, and her terrible attitude on the other.
とんでもないチャラ男だったダミエンは、少しずつ性差別の現実を理解し始める。今回性的対象にされたり、上司とのセックスを断ったことで首にされたり、自分の権利を守るために「マスキリスト」(フェミニストの逆で男性の権利を女性と平等に信じる人たち)団体に入るのが、彼なのだ。彼は有名な女性作家のアレキサンドラと出会い、彼女との関係のせいで辛くなることもある。彼女は「男性差別主義者」だけど、主人公はどうしようもなく恋に落ちてしまう。
The inversion of gender roles is not a very uncommon trope in movies, literature and comics (another one I really liked was the manga Ooku, for example). However, I felt like no other book I’ve read, no other movie I’ve seen has been so committed to a realistic representation of what would actually happen if men and women had their positions inverted.
男女関係を逆転させるのは、映画や漫画などで珍しくないと思う（例えば、私が好きだった作品の中で漫画の『大奥』とかがある。）だけど、こんなに現実的に男女関係が逆さまになった状態を描写した映画を見るのは初めてだ。
It is clear in some points that the aim of the director was to show how does the gendered distribution of power work in society. The movie is so brutally raw that in the middle of it you forget that in the real world it is women that are routinely discriminated against, and you start to emphasize with the main character. It is also an amazing demonstration of how arbitrary are the notions with which we normalize gender relations: to me it was kind of shocking to see how in the movie pregnancy is treated as a symbol of strength, and thus of the superiority of the woman’s body, who can carry through the important task of giving birth to children.
監督の目的は男女関係の中での力関係を現すことだったと思う。映画の描写は、普段男女差別で損してしまうのは女性だということを忘れさせるぐらいよくできていて、途中から主人公の味方になっても仕方がないくらい。そして私たちが「普通」だと思ってしまう「男女の特徴」も、実は自然ではないことを明らかに見せてくれる。例えば、男女差別のもとを妊娠のせいにする人も多いと思うけど、妊娠することは映画の中での力の象徴として描かれている。子供を授かることのできる女性こそは、優越的なのだ。
The film reduced “men” and “women” to mere interchangeable symbols in a dynamic of power. The movie does not paint women as “the good guys”– women do horrible things throughout those 180 minutes. However it is precisely because of this, and of the sharp contrast with our everyday life situations, that the movie represents gender dynamics so well. Whatever we think is the true nature of “men” and “women”, the film makes it clear that it is not enough to justify gender discrimination.
映画の中での「男性」と「女性」は、力関係のゲームに参加するプレイヤーのようだと思う。「男」も「女」も、結局レッテルの一つでしかない。女性はヒーローとしてあらわれることが一回もないし、とても残酷なことをしてしまうことも多い。だけど、私たちの日常生活と極めて違うこの描き方こそが、男女関係の実態を表していると思う。「女」と「男」の「本性」がなんであれ、この映画ではジェンダー差別を説明するだけでは不十分だっていうことがはっきりわかる。
