映画レビュー: レディ・バード
こんにちは！
みんなは最近、映画を観た？私は『Lady Bird』という映画(日本では今年の6月にやっと公開したの！)と『少女邂逅』という映画を観たよ。どちらもそれぞれ、アメリカと日本の若い女性監督が撮った映画なのだけれど、どことなく似ているところがあって面白いな、と思ったのでレビューを書くね。
Hi everyone! Have you guys watched any movies recently? I watched "Lady Bird" (which was finally released in Japan in June) and the Japanese film, "Girls' Encounter." Both are directed by young female directors and I found some similarities between both.
先に観たのは『Lady Bird』。月曜日の夜に、有楽町の映画館に観に行った。ベタにポップコーンを食べながら観たい映画だと思ったから、キャラメルポップコーンとオレンジジュースを買って。映画館で買うポップコーンってなんであんなにワクワクするんだろう。隣に座っていた高校生くらいの女の子（1人で観に来ている様子。制服にドクターマーチンのローファー、テロテロなトートバッグというキッチュな出で立ち。）がハンバーガーを頬張っていて、すごく良いなあと思ってしまった。家でDVDで映画を観るのも好きだけど、映画館のこういう雰囲気に浸りながら観るのが大好き。
それでは、LADY BIRDの方からレビューを始めるね。
I watched "Lady Bird" first. I went to a movie theater in Yurakucho, Tokyo and I bought myself a bag of caramel popcorn and a cup of orange juice because I felt like I should be watching this movie while eating a bag of popcorn. Why do I get so excited to have popcorn at a movie theatre? The high school girl next to me also was sitting by herself; she was wearing a pair of Dr. Martens' loafers with her school uniform and her used tote bag, while she was stuffing her face with a hamburger and somehow, it made my heart warm a bit. I like watching DVDs at home, but I love this atmosphere of movie theatres as well.
So, I'll share my movie review of "Lady Bird" first.
アメリカの女優、脚本家、映画監督であるグレタ・ガーウィグ(1984〜)による初の単独監督作。(女優として、フランシス・ハや20センチュリー・ウーマンなどに出ているよ。2作品ともとっても良い映画で、グレタの演技もすんばらしいので是非観てみて！) 第90回アカデミー賞で作品賞ほか6部門にノミネート。ガーウィグは、女性として史上5人目の監督賞候補になった。
American actress, writer and director, Greta Gerwig, directed her first work with Lady Bird. She's amazing as an actress as well on "Frances Ha" and "20th Century Women." They are also great films so please check them out! She was nominated for 6 different categories at the 90th Oscar's Annual Academy Awards, and Gerwig became the 5th female director to be nominated.

Plot
Christine "Lady Bird" MacPherson is a high school senior from the "wrong side of the tracks." She longs for adventure, sophistication, and opportunity, but finds none of that in her Sacramento Catholic high school. Lady Bird follows the title character's senior year in high school, including her first romance, her participation in the school play, and most importantly, her applying for college. (IMDb)
アメリカの青春映画って、アメフトのスター選手とチアリーダーの恋だったり、はたまた地味なオタクがひょんなことからヒーローになる話だったり、学校での立場が真にリア充か、全くそうではないかと振り切れているものが多い気がする。自分が生きてきた世界と違いすぎて、違うものだと思って観ることが多いのだけれど、（それを楽しむために観ることも多いかも）この作品はものすごく共感できた。すごくリアル。いじめられているわけでもないし、普通に楽しい学生生活なんだけど、超イケてる訳でもない。そういう微妙な立場のヒロインって今までいたっけ？
For me, 'American young adult' films are always like the football team's popular boy and cheerleading girl trope - something that is always exaggerated. It's always different from my life and my world, so I only watch for fun but nothing else when I watch those films but this film is different. I felt connected. This is real. The main character wasn't bullied, she was having a decent school life, and she's not a "cool" girl. Was there any character like her before?
クリスティンは、ミュージカル部に入ってもハイスクール・ミュージカルのガブリエラのように、文武両道のキラキラヒロインになる訳でもなく、（トロイのようなキュートな男の子をゲットしたが、ある理由から彼はトロイにはなりえなかった。）Gleeのレイチェルのように毎回ソロを張るスターになる訳でもない。それどころか、半年で行かなくなってしまうのだ。普段の私服はなかなかイケてるのに、何故かプロムのドレスはどこかダサい。夢はないけど、何かを成し遂げたい。自分の居場所はここではないはず。ここではないどこかへ行って、他の人とは違う特別な自分になりたい。そんなヒロイン。ああこれって私のことだ！と何回も思った。
Even Christine joined the drama club. She didn't became like Gabriela from High School Musical who is perfect and lovely. (She DID get a cute boy like Troy but he wasn't like Troy for some reasons.) Or she didn't became like Rachel from Glee who always sings solo parts and become a star. And finally, she stops going to the club after 6 months. Her outfits are decently cool but her prom dress is a bit tacky (Editor's note: this was the opinion of the writer. I loved this dress and perhaps you might too! Everyone has a different sense of style!) She doesn't have a dream but she wants to do something. She feels like her place is not there. She feels she needs to go somewhere else and become who she wants to be. She is that kind of girl. And I thought so many times, "It's me."
個人的にすごくツボだったのが、制服の着方。学校で超イケてる女の子は、すんごいミニのスカートにしているんだけど。（そして服装チェックで怒られる。）レディバードは、膝丈なんだよね。そういうの、私もそうだった！みたいな笑
One of my favorite parts of the film was the way she wears her school uniform. Many of the "cool" girls at school wear their skirt really short like a mini skirt and getting noted by teachers, but Lady Bird wears hers knee length. And I was same. haha
家族との関係もめっちゃリアルで。ママのことは好きなんだけど、上手くいかない。養子の兄（とその彼女）は、いちいちウザくて。リストラにあってしまったパパは、優しくていつもレディバードの味方。お母さんより、お父さんの方との関係の方が良いっていう子は、意外といるんじゃないかな。そういう意味でもすごくリアルな感じ。
The family relationship was also very real. She loves her mom but they don't have a good relationship. And her older adopted brother and his girlfriend are a bit annoying. Her dad, who got laid off, is always so sweet and on Lady Bird's side. I guess there are many kids who have a better relationship with their dad than their mom. And that made me feel the story was more familiar.
レディバード「私のこと好き？（ママに向かって）」
ママ「私はいつもあなたがベストな生き方をしてほしいと思っているだけよ。」
レディバード「もし今がベストだとしたら？私はこれがベストな状態なのよ。」
っていう、やりとりで涙腺が崩壊した笑 私が思っていても、母に伝えらすれないことをレディバードが代弁してくれた感じ！友達と観るのも良いけれど、是非お母さんと観てほしいな、と思ったよ。あったかい雰囲気で、全然泣くような内容じゃないのに、何故か涙が止まらなかった。観終わった後は、いろんな人や物が愛おしく思えるような映画だったよ。
Lady Bird: "Do you like me?"
Mom: "I want you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be."
Lady Bird: "What if this is the best version?"
Tears came uncontrollably out from my eyes for these words. It's almost the words for my mom that I'd never be able to say and ask. It's good to watch with your friends, but I really suggest you to watch with your mom. The scene's atmosphere was so warm and not a scene you usually cry for but I just couldn't stop crying. After I watched, all I could do was just adore everything and everyone I have.
私が今まで出会ってきた映画の中で1番、私たちが普段感じている気持ちを代弁してくれている作品だと思った。特に新しい手法や題材を使っている訳ではないけれど、今まで観てきたアメリカ映画とは、物語と私との距離が近いという点で、明らかに違った。それは、監督のグレタ・ガーウィグが、若い女性であることが大きな理由の一つではないかと私は思ったよ。まだまだ映画業界には女性の映画監督は少ないけれど、彼女は我々に一つの大きな可能性を示してくれたように思う。彼女の次の作品も観てみたいと思ったよ。
I feel like this film represents us, our generation, the most. Saying aloud our feelings through the film. The film is not special as they're not using special effects, new techniques or anything like that, but the film was so different from any American film I've ever watched. I feel like one of the biggest reasons can be the director was young and female. We have a lack of female producers and directors in the industry, but I feel like Gerwig showed and brought us some possibilities. I can't wait to see her next work.
