book review by ruru - vol.3

Hi there, how are you all doing?

I've talked about books from all over the world in this book review series, but this time I am committed to just one country. This country is England! I am not a huge fan of English/British literature, but I realized that most of the novels that I read this month were of English origin. So here it is!

こんにちわ、夏休みを終わり学校が始まる季節。今回は前回２つの記事とは違ってある一つの国の本を紹介するね。その国とはイギリス。実はイギリス王道文学、「プライドと偏見」や「ジェーン・エア」などは今まであまり好きじゃなくて、衣装が可愛いから映画はみるけどって感じ。でも最近読んだ本にたまたまイギリスのものが多かったから今回はイギリス縛りでレビュー！

1. Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf / 『ダロウェイ夫人』 ヴァージニア・ウルフ

The first one is Virginia Woolf. Classic. I tried one of her essays a few years ago and couldn’t finish it, yet she was one of the authors I felt that I must read their books. I'm still not a big fan, but I enjoyed ‘Mrs Dalloway’. The story is set during spring in London, which I adore. I've lived in London, so it made me feel as if I am in there again and I could just picture all the scenes when I was reading it. I will try one more book by her and will see whether I like her or not.

まず最初は王道、ヴァージニア・ウルフ。有名だから名前を聞いたことある人も多いかな？フェミニストとして有名な彼女の作品は、読もう読もうと思いつつ手が出せてなかった。ダロウェイ夫人の舞台は1920年、爽やかな春のロンドンの朝から始まるダロウェイ夫人の一日。本を通して美しいロンドンの様子が目に浮かぶ。「意識の流れ」という手法を使った文章で、正直ちょっと読みにくいんだけど、でも読んでみる価値はあり！

2. Asylum Piece by Anna Kavan / 『アサイラム・ピース』　アンナ・カヴァン

First of all, I loved it. If you like ‘Hello Sadness’ by Françoise Sagan, you will enjoy this one. It’s dark and sensitive. Kavan had been suffering from depression throughout her life - you can truly feel her pain in this book. I feel as if I don't have the words to review or explain the book, so please just read.

一言、素晴らしい。フランソワ・サガンの「悲しみよこんにちは」が好きな人は好きだと思う！鬱病に苦しんでいたというカヴァンが感じていたものが伝わって来て、苦しい気持ちになるけど、そういう気持ちは自分だけじゃないんだと彼女はわかってくれるんだと思わされた作品。

3. Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie / 『真夜中の子供たち』　サルマン・ラシュディ

This book is famous so you may know of it - which is why I read it and didn’t like it. Salman Rushdie is an Indian-born English author. The book is set in India in 1947, which was very interesting, but the book was too long. I enjoyed the first 50 pages and didn’t enjoy the next 50 pages. Then, I would enjoy the next 50 pages again. And repeat. But, it's one of the most successful English books and I know some people who read this one loved it, so it’s worth reading I guess. Also, Netflix will be making a series of the book so you can check that out as well.

インド生まれイギリス育ちのサルマン・ラシュディの作品。世界的に有名で絶賛されている傑作らしいので読んだのだけど、全然好きじゃなかった、、、でも傑作だから読まねばという気持ちで頑張った笑 1947年のインドが舞台。長い小説だけれど、ネットフリックスでドラマシリーズになるみたいなので気になる人はそちらを待ってみるのもあり。

4. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë / 『嵐が丘』　エミリー・ブロンテ

This is one of the books I've seen in my house bookshelves, but never opened it. I like to watch these kinds of films such as Jane Eyre and Pride & Prejudice to see their costumes, but I'm not a big fan of their stories. So, I didn’t try to read Wuthering Heights either. When I did, however, I surprisingly enjoyed it. It was very well written and the story was great too. I will definitely try Jane Eyre and also will watch the Wuthering Heights film, which was released in 2011. I watched ‘To Walk the Invisible’, which is about the Bronte sisters. I'd recommend to watch this if you've read their books.

こちらも王道のエミリー・ブロンテの『嵐が丘』。最近、ブロンテ姉妹の映画『To Walk Invisible』をみたのだけれど、それで初めて『嵐が丘』のエミリー・ブロンテと『ジェーン・エア』のシャーロット・ブロンテが姉妹だって知ったの！それで今回、家にずっとあった『嵐が丘』を読んでみたよ。ストーリーは有名だし映画化もされてるから書かないけれど、予想以上に思い白くて一気に読んじゃった！今回は日本語で読んだから、次は英語でも挑戦してみたいと思ってるよ。

5. The Passion Of New Eve by Angela Carter / 『新しきイヴの受難』　アンジェラ・カーター

I stumbled upon this book in the library by chance and I'm so glad that I picked it up. Feminism, sexuality and irony are depicted through magic realism in this book. I was impressed with how it was written; it’s complicated and nonsensical sometimes, yet I couldn’t stop reading it once I started. According to the postscript by the Japanese translator of the book, Carter lived in Japan for 2 years before she wrote the novel. The book is influenced by her experiences in Japan: how gender roles are different from the UK, different religions and more, which is super interesting for me. Carter also published a short story book that was based on her experiences in Japan called Fireworks: Nine Profane Pieces.

フェミニズム、セクシュアリティーに対する皮肉がマジックリアリズム手法を使って描かれた作品。話がどんどん展開していって読み始めたら止まらなかった！カーターは2年間日本に住んでいたことがあって、この作品には彼女の日本での体験、イギリス(欧米)とは違ったジェンダーロールや宗教の違いなどが影響されているそう。カーターは他にも『花火―九つの冒涜的な物語』という短編小説で日本での体験を書いているらしいのでそちらもチェックしたい！
