book review by ruru - vol. 4
Hello there, it’s been a while! I haven’t had much time to read the past few months so finally, here’s the new book review!
みなさん、お久しぶり。前回からかなり空いてしまいましたが、ブックレビュー第４弾です。今はあまり本を読む時間がないのですが、来月くらいからまた沢山時間ができそうなので、お楽しみに！
1. Vita Brevis: A Letter to St Augustine by Jostein Gaarder / 『フローリアの「告白」』ヨースタイン・ゴルデル ー Norway
The author, Jostein Gaarder found a letter in Buenos Aires, Argentina and based his book off of it. The letter was written by a woman who was a lover of Augustine of Hippo, who was a Christian theologian and philosopher in the 4th century. We don’t know if Gaarder actually found the letter or he made everything up but either way, I thought it was a very romantic and exciting book as a history lover.
4世紀、古代キリスト教の神学者、哲学者アウグスティヌスへ、昔の恋人だった女性が書いたとされる手紙を著者ゴルデルが南米ブエノスアイレスで発見して訳したという設定の本。本当にゴルデルがそのような手紙を見つけたのか、それとも全て想像なのかはわからないのですが、「哲学」と「愛」が詰まった１冊。全然知らないで読んだんですが、著者のゴルデルは有名なファンタジー哲学小説「ソフィーの世界」を書いた人だったんですね。文中にも確か数回出てきた「抱いて、いのちは短いのよ」という恋人女性の言葉が心に残った作品。本当に、人生は短い、自分自身を偏見や固まった考えでがんじがらめにするのではなく、自分の中にある感情を表現することも大事だと思わされました。哲学といっても小説ですし読みやすくおすすめです。
2. Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín / 『ブルックリン』コルム・トビーン ー UK
This book was made into the film Brooklyn so some of you might already have watched it. The book was nice and easy to read but I prefer the film because I love the costumes so much. It’s not so different from the film, and it’s a nice read for a holiday/relaxing time.
映画にもなったので知っている人も多いであろう１冊。映画が好きなのと、気楽に楽しめるものが読みたかったので選びました。本には映画では書かれてなかったシーンなどもあったけれど、映画での衣装が好きすぎるので私は映画の方が好きだけど基本的にどっちがいい悪いもない感じ。難しくないので英語で本を読みたい、英語の勉強したいという人にもおすすめ。
3. Vagina: A New Biography by Naomi Wolf / 『ヴァギナ』ナオミ・ウルフ ー US
Vagina is written by an American feminist and journalist, Naomi Wolf. I knew of her as she’s quite famous among feminists but this was my first book by her. It was really really interesting and informative. The book talks about the vagina from different sides such as the medical side, art side, and cultural/historical side. You can find out the mechanism of the female orgasm. I would recommend this book not only for women but also men.
フェミニストでジャーナリストのナオミ・ウルフによる『ヴァギナ』は、もうタイトル通りヴァギナに関すること丸々１冊。結構有名なフェミニストなので知っていたのですが、彼女が書いたものを読んだのは初めて。英語でアカデミックな本を読むのは久しぶりだったのですが、思ってたよりもスムーズに読み進められました。医学的なリサーチからみたヴァギナに関することや、文化そして歴史の中で見るヴァギナ。一番面白かったのは、文化的な面からみたヴァギナで、神話とエロスや女性のマスタベーションについてなど。日本語訳も出ています。医学的な方面から女性のオーガズムについて詳しく書かれています。
4. Other Voices, Other Rooms by Truman Capote / 『遠い声 遠い部屋』トルーマン・カポーティ ー US
I didn’t like it... sorry! The writing was beautiful but I could not get into it. It reminded me The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger, which I also didn’t like.
名作、、、らしいですが全然好きじゃなかったし、残らなかった。特に最初の方、読んでいても全く頭に入ってこなくて、無理やり旅行中に持って行き、暇な待ち時間に読んで終わらせました。文章は綺麗だな、と思ったのですが、うーん。サリンジャーの『ライ麦畑でつかまえて』を思い出したけど、あれも好きじゃなかったし。でも名作らしいので気になる方はどうぞ。
