how to express your needs

Mental health has been one of the important topics for me for about a year, which I also talked about in an article last year. I haven’t cared about it that much before, but since I spend more time at home because of covid, I have come to read a lot of books and watch videos about mental health, and I’ve learned that it is important to know how to take care of my mental health so that I can be kinder to myself. Today, I would like to talk about how to express your needs to people around you, which I have learned a lot recently.

I haven’t been good at communicating how I feel about things. I have rarely said no to people around me and I didn’t know when I could say it either. However, as I learned more about how to improve my mental health, I realized that I could’ve actually said no at some specific moments in the past. Looking back on when I was in school, I remember some of my classmates sometimes asked me if they could copy my homework. I used to say yes to them because I was too afraid to offend them. To be honest, I didn’t feel good at all seeing them copy what I worked on by myself, but I didn’t see it as a big deal because it wouldn’t affect my grades and I didn’t feel that bad about being someone’s help. But, now that I think about it, I could have refused because that was not something I wanted to do at all.
